Mission

From Regional Analysis of Frontier Basins to Block Evaluation. See GES regional report “The Petroleum Reservoir Systems of Libya An Executive Summary”.

Regional Basin Assessment

Focus on key regional geological information and data to identify the main sedimentary sequences/cycles for use in interpreting the geological/tectonic basin framework.

Palaeogeography and Palaeotectonics

Using comparative stratigraphy, depositional environments, facies changes, sediment provenance, sediment dispersal patterns, and regional tectonic data, develop the regional palaeogeographic and palaeotectonic models for the evolution of basins through time, from the macro plate tectonic scale to the local specific basin. These maps are used to identify the major reservoirs, seals and source beds of the regional petroleum system.

Regional Reservoir and Petroleum Systems

A reservoir system is a group of reservoirs within a given basin that taken together define a productive or potentially productive zone within a specific stratigraphic interval.

Play Types and Play Fairways

Using the petroleum reservoir systems concept as paradigm, the principal Play Types are identified, classified, and used in preparing Play Fairways. An assessment of the hydrocarbon potential of basins and blocks is derived from these maps and from analysis of the regional petroleum system.

Block Evaluation and Ranking

Each reservoir system/play is evaluated and ranked on four different parameters: basin setting, petroleum charge, resource potential, and risk. Specific ranking profiles are produced for each of the selected evaluation parameters and displayed on a matrix grid. The resulting Ranking Profiles are used to select the top exploration blocks in a basin.
